A distinction is made between three types of batteries and chemical substance groups:

Industrial batteries:

Lead acid
Nickel Cadmium (NiCd)
Other

Any battery or accumulator designed for exclusively industrial or professional uses or used as propulsion in any type of electric vehicle.

Examples: Emergency or backup power supply at hospitals. Propulsion battery for electric vehicle, e-bikes, electric wheelchair.

Automotive batteries:

Lead acid
Nickel Cadmium (NiCd)
Other

Any battery or accumulator used for automotive starter, lighting or ignition power and batteries/accumulators similar to starter batteries in form and size.

Examples: Ignition battery for vehicles. Batteries suitable for providing current for ordinary use in i.e. caravans.

Portable batteries:

Mercury (Zinc, Mercury oxide, Silver oxide)
Lead acid
Nickel Cadmium (NiCd)
Other

Any battery that is sealed, can easily be held in a hand,  has a weight that does not exceed 3 kg*, and is neither an industrial battery or accumulator nor an automotive battery or accumulator.

Examples: All so-called consumer batteries (AA and AAA batteries, batteries in mobile phones and all other consumer equipment).

*)The weight limit is an indicator applicable in combination with the other criterias.
