Equipment, which is not designed for replacement/removal of the radioactive source, is exempt from producer responsibility. By contrast, equipment designed for replacement/removal of the radioactive source, is covered by producer responsibility.

In this context, smoke detectors containing radioactive substances are mentioned specifically as exempt from producer responsibility and the WEEE Order.
