Motor-driven vehicles covered by the Road Traffic Act as well as boats, airplanes and trains are exempt from the WEEE Order.
Electrical and electronic accessories for motor-driven vehicles, boats, airplanes and trains such as navigation equipment, refrigeration equipment, radio and sound equipment, however, are not exempt from the rules of the WEEE Order on producer responsibility. Such equipment is typically of a nature independent from the built-in function of the vehicles. For example, the additional amplifier or the external CD player connected to the original music centre of the vehicle are independent electrical units – accessories that may be removed leaving the original music centre of the vehicle intact. Also, the GPS unit, echo sounder with screen and external transducer in the boat are not integrated parts of the boat and are thus also covered by producer responsibility. An example from an airplane is the intercom headsets with hearing protection in a one-motor aircraft.
Note: WEEE removed from motor-driven vehicles etc. must be managed according to the general rules on management of WEEE.
