Dealers and distributors

It is not legal for distributors and dealers to buy batteries and accumulators from producers/importers not having assumed their producer responsibility for products in Denmark, including registration with DPA-System.

You may check whether a distributor has registered for producer responsibility by asking the company or verifying whether it has registered with DPA-System.

Note: Distributors and dealers are obliged to ensure that the purchaser receives various information, including how the user should discard waste batteries.

Take-back of waste batteries and accumulators

Companies subject to producer responsibility have a take-back duty relating to waste batteries. For automotive batteries and industrial batteries the company subject to producer responsibility may agree with the purchaser that the latter is in charge of waste management duties and any ensuing costs (transfer of waste management responsibility).

Retailers, distributors and other dealers of batteries and accumulators have the right but not the duty to take back waste batteries.

Options and rules for how distributors and dealers can dispose of waste batteries and accumulators differ:

Portable batteries and accumulators

• Disposal with municipal collection schemes
• Disposal directly with producers/importers or their collective schemes

Industrial and automotive batteries and accumulators

• Disposal directly with producers/importers or their collective schemes (if the purchaser of the battery has agreed with the producer that the former has taken over the waste management duty the producer is no longer obliged to take back and treat these batteries)
• Can be disposed with an environmentally approved recycling company designated by the local authority
• Can be disposed with an environmentally approved recycling company found through other channels
